Your mental health

Mental health or addiction problems affect one in two New Zealanders. ProCare's qualified doctors and nurses are trained to help you manage mental health issues, and can refer you to a ProCare psychologist or psychiatrist.

If you're suffering from depression or worried about the mental health of someone in your family, talk to your ProCare doctor (GP) about your concerns. All our practice GPs are able to provide basic mental health assessments, and we offer a range of extended mental health services, including the Procare Psychological Services (PPS) team.

Your doctor can help you identify what is it that is concerning or affecting you or your family member, and either assist you with a series of extended appointments, or refer you to another service, such as our ProCare Psychological Services (PPS) team.

Find out more about ProCare Psychological Services (PPS) here.

PPS staff provide psychological assessment and treatment of a wide range of mental health issues including:
  • Stress, including work related stress and dealing with unexpected events
  • Difficulties in relationships (couple and family)
  • Grief counselling following the loss of a loved one, or after separation or divorce
  • Depression, low self esteem and sleep problems
  • Anxiety conditions, including panic attacks
  • Drug and alcohol problems
  • Children and teenage issues, including bullying, depression ,anxiety, grief counselling and behaviour issues
  • Adjustment to and self-management of medical conditions such as diabetes

Mental health issues are surprisingly common. With everything life throws at you, it's natural to feel as though you can't cope. Talking to a qualified mental health professional - such as a psychologist - can help you deal with your mental health issues in a friendly, healthy and confidential manner.

Most ProCare mental health patients experience positive changes in their mental health and wellbeing within 3-6 months.

PPS offers a short online self-assessment to help you identify any potential mental health issues - click on the image above to take this free mental health questionnaire.
